TEMPLE CHILDREN PRESENTS BLACK & WHITE NIGHT 2024: FEATURING ROD CAMERON, THING THING STUDIO & MORE
On view for one night only, is a special preview of works by local artist Rod Cameron. The three paintings featured are a commission by a Seattle collector who has a keen interest in history with a love for Hawai'i and its art. These works blend these interests and the goal was that three selected scenes from Hawaiʻi’s history be brought to an expression on canvas for his home. Cameron consulted with kūmū Ehulani Stephany of Puna, who provided information about the lifting of the Naha stone and models from whom he was able to draw from life and photograph. Cameron often uses Stephany’s hālau when Hawaiian art is the theme of his work.
“In all of history there is tragedy — but, we hope these paintings will uplift the Native Hawaiian culture, to help keep the art going, showing them as strong, proud and full of color. There is much art on the subject, so we wanted our aspects and point of view to be from the Hawaiians on the surface of the water, on the deck with them, or in the spiritual setting of the Naha Stone.” - Rod Cameron
Learn more about Rod here, and meet him in person at our Black & White nite event this Friday.
